A Popular History of Fetish Sex

Over the years, BDSM (bondage, discipline, sadism and masochism) has gotten a pretty bad reputation. For some people, it is a way of expressing their sexuality, while others find the principles extremely liberating. However, for non-practitioners, it is looked at as an unhealthy fetish, which if not done correctly can be dangerous to its practitioners. No matter what you think of BDSM, it is a sexual behavior that has been around for as long as some civilizations have existed. It has evolved over time and as technology advances, so have the toys evolved that are used by dominants and submissives.

A history of BDSM

B&D, D&S, and S&M are all sexual practices that the term originates from. Because BDSM has been around for a very long time, exploring its history is like hacking the core dynamics of human interaction because dominance and submission, restraint and role-play have existed as both erotic and non-erotic practices for ages. In fact, fresh archaeological evidence reveals that dominance and submissiveness are sexual practices that date back to over 5000 years ago. One particular piece of evidence from the 6th century BC and was found in an Etruscan burial site located in Tarquinia.

Inside the Etruscan burial site, an engraving of two men whipping a woman with a cane while having sex shows how long ago men and women have derived gratification from pain during acts of ecstasy. The evidence is proof that ancient peoples practiced BDSM.

Famous historian and sexuality educator, Anne Nomis wrote about fetishes and worship in her book called ‘The History & Arts of the Dominatrix.’ In the book, ancient worshipers of the goddess lnanna (the Sumerian goddess of love, fertility, and warfare) embraced diverse sexualities like submissives, cross-dressers, slaves and much more.

Many civilizations from Egypt to Greek and Rome have practiced BDSM in one form or another. The ancient Indian Hindu text ‘Kama Sutra’ also outlines particular types of allowable hitting during sex. In fact, the content of Kama Sutra might have helped in spreading many sexual practices, like BDSM, across the world.

Celebrities and BDSM

Marquis de Sade was a 17th-century celebrity. A French aristocrat, philosopher, and revolutionary who was famous for his ‘obscene’ novels. In some of his works, he wrote about role playing and depicted erotic scenes that were too vivid for the taste of 17th-century society. These scenes were deemed violent and criminal, and of course, he was imprisoned for his work. That didn’t stop him because he continued to write about these practices while he was locked away for 32 years in an insane asylum. Some wonder whether he was a pervert or simply being rebellious at the time… we will never know!

Fast forward to the current century, and you will understand why people no longer hide their sexual proclivities in a dark shroud of secrecy. In America, BDSM content started to appear in commercial television and photography around the 19703. John Willie, Irving Klaw, Robert Mapplethorpe and Eric Stanton were part of the movement responsible for the general acceptance of BDSM in mainstream American culture today. There are many BDSM groups online and offline. Shops sell toys for role playing, and whether you are the dominant or submissive partner, various toys can assist to make your sexual experience more thrilling.

Century after century, many celebrities are indulging in BDSM. In the 18th century, Philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau wrote in his autobiography that he was a submissive. The spanking he received from his young age of 8 influenced his life as an adult. Up to the 20th century, BDSM practices was mostly frowned at by society, but in the world today, your sexual choices are your own to make.

Some celebrities that practice BDSM

Some celebrities have come out of the BDSM closet to talk about their sexual preferences, and as more and more people continue to do this, those who are weary of expressing their sexuality will start to loosen up and explore all their choices. Let’s take a look at some brave celebrities that have been open about their practice of BDSM:

Penn Jillette

Famous Las Vegas magician and the host of Celebrity Apprentice, Penn Jillette opened up his sex dungeon to the world on Cribs (the MTV show). Penn also showed off his walk in closet that featured a centerpiece harness, suspended from the ceiling. This sexy closet had whips and restraints and is supposedly where the magic happens.

Angelina Jolie

Angelina was a poster child for BDSM a few years back and got in the news for her many BDSM exploits. She talked about her BDSM practices openly and said that it helped create a connection between herself and her partner. These days though, she isn’t talking that much about her sexuality, but we heard right the first time. Some reports also claim that she is into hematolagnia, otherwise known as ‘blood play.’ It was said that she and Billy Bob Thornton spiced up their sex lives with knives. They would cut each other while having sex and taste each other’s blood.

Rhianna

This songstress is not afraid to declare her fondness for BDSM. She was quoted saying “I like to be spanked. Being tied up is fun.” She talks about it in many interviews and sings about chains and whips. Rhianna is a submissive who likes to be a little lady in the bedroom and loves to be told what to do by her dominant.

Carmen Electra

Hot and sexy model Carmen Electra likes to be tied up and spanked. Carmen is a kinky celebrity that loves her sex toys. She told Playboy that she isn’t afraid of a little pain and loves to be spanked with a coat hanger. In New York in 2010, she stated that she is into bondage but sometimes likes to be a dominatrix.

Through the bestselling book by E.L James, Fifty Shades of Grey, many people today know about BDSM. While many practitioners question the portrayal of BDSM in the book, it’s great that it has inspired a lot of people to explore their sexual inclinations and embrace their sexuality. I bet E.L James never thought that the book would start a sexual revolution and encourage readers to find themselves.
